DOWNTOWN WILMINGTON IMPROVEMENTS COMING SOON

As part of an overall improvement project in downtown Wilmington, I am pleased to announce that the City will soon purchase and install 29 new decorative street lights for the area surrounding the Anaheim Street and Avalon Boulevard intersection.

This is just the beginning of a number of great improvements for downtown Wilmington. We will be installing these new lights, planting new trees, improving the sidewalks and installing stamped crosswalks.  We are working closely with the local Business Improvement District to really make a difference in this busy shopping corridor.

Ischia Becomes a Sister City
I was so pleased to be able to sign the official papers to make Ischia, Italy the 22nd Sister City to Los Angeles.

What I love most about Ischia is its close ties to San Pedro.  Councilwoman Hahn and Ischia Secretary General Montouri sign the official Sister City agreement
Ischia is a beautiful island of about 50,000 people off the coast of Naples.  Like San Pedro, it is a big fishing town and also boasts incredible wineries and ceramic art, making it a wonderful tourist destination.

Our Sister City relationship will allow us to officially share ideas, people and materials in a number of ways.  We will share our music, our art, our sports and our culture.  This is just the beginning of an ongoing relationship with Ischia.

A Living Wage for Hotel Workers on Century Boulevard
As the chair of the City Council's Trade, Commerce and Tourism Committee, I oversee the Port of Los Angeles, the airport and tourism in L.A.  One project that we have been working on is improving the Century Boulevard Corridor near the airport.

Councilwoman Hahn, with hotel workers, watches as the Mayor signs the new ordinances into law
While discussing the improvements, concerns were raised about the working conditions of the hotel workers near LAX.  These men and women are the faces of hospitality in Los Angeles to visitors of the City.  Most concerning to me is the low wages, and lack of benefits for these workers. Perhaps most shocking is the fact that items on guest checks that are labeled 'gratuity' (room service, banquets) do not always go to the workers, but back to management.  In response, the City Council passed, and the Mayor signed, three new laws to allow the workers to keep their tips, require a living wage for the workers, and to require hotels to retain workers for 90 days following a change of ownership.

As Author David Shipler said, "the term working poor should be an oxymoron.  Nobody who works hard should be poor in America." The City Council had an opportunity to make a difference for the Councilwoman Hahn greets hotel workers that will benefit from new laws working poor in our city, and it was an opportunity that we could not afford to pass up.

It was especially rewarding to enact these laws right before the holidays!

Welcome Park Plans Unveiled
I was so pleased to unveil the designs for the long-awaited San Pedro Welcome Park.

The Welcome Park will be constructed on the currently blighted Councilwoman Hahn, with Welcome Park visionary Jim Hussey
property on Gaffey Street, at the end of the 110 freeway.

The new park, which will begin construction in February and completed by the Summer, will finally give people the right impression of San Pedro.  We will welcome residents and visitors alike with a park of trees and nautical components.  It will be the perfect greeting to the great town of San Pedro.
